As of the 2020 Census, the population is around 18,000 residents. It is a relatively small but vibrant community.

The Arcata Plaza is the heart of the city and a central gathering place. It hosts farmers’ markets, festivals, and community events. The plaza is surrounded by local shops, restaurants, and art galleries.
Close to some of the most famous redwood forests in the world, including the Redwood National and State Parks , which feature some of the tallest trees on Earth.
Has a cool, maritime climate with mild, wet winters and cool, dry summers. Fog is common, especially in the mornings.

The economy is driven by education (Cal Poly Humboldt), healthcare, and small businesses. The legalization of cannabis in California has also impacted the local economy, as Humboldt County is known for its cannabis cultivation.
Served by the Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV). The city is also accessible via Highway 101, which runs along the West Coast.
The area is rich in biodiversity, with opportunities to see elk, seals, and a variety of bird species. The nearby Humboldt Bay is a key habitat for migratory birds.
Arcata hosts several annual events, including the Arcata Bay Oyster Festival and the Kinetic Grand Championship
, a quirky, human-powered art race.
